In the beginning…
Growing up, I loved spending time with my grandfather, Bob Tschida. I can’t remember a time with him when he didn’t have his camera. Always artistic, he first became interested in photography while in the Army in the Pacific Theater during WW2. It’s thanks to him that so much of my childhood, and our family history in general, is preserved on film. I always wanted to be like him and, knowing this, my father bought me my first camera, a kodak 110 instamatic, when I was seven. I still have it. Dad later bought me my first SLR, a Praktica PLC-3, when I started high school. I still have that, too. Grandpa worked hard all his life: sign painter, stevedore, and shipbuilder, among other things, but photography was his creative outlet. I never worked as hard as he did (though the “Doc” was earned and not an affectation) but I have always found great happiness, as he did, just by looking through the lens.
